Boarding school planning campus-wide VoIP after Wi-Fi upgrade?

A Hertfordshire boarding school is considering converting to an in-house IP PBX solution to provide all staff and students with a cross-campus VoIP network.

This follows Bishop's Stortford College's implementation of a blanket Wi-Fi system from wireless specialist Extricom across the 130 acre site.

"There was demand from the pupils and parents for pupils to have Internet access in the houses where they live," head of IT at the college, Steve Bacon, told Techworld.com.

Mr Bacon explained that the children wanted to use a net connection for out of hours study and to keep in touch with their families.

"It seemed appropriate, and they have handled it very maturely," he said.

Mr Bacon added that the success of the Wi-Fi network has prompted the college to look into whether it should upgrade its current PBX from a hosted solution to an IP-based one which could be run on-site.
