VoIP on PSP proves popular

BT's plan to develop a VoIP software application for the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) has been shown to be popular, at least in theory, by a new poll.

Users of gadget website pocket-lint.co.uk gave their opinion of the idea, with 60 per cent saying that they would use it to turn their PSP into a VoIP phone.

Plans for the service will see the PSP connect to a Wi-Fi interent service and let PSP owners make video calls, if they have the camera and microphone adaptors.

Although initially it will be only avialble in the UK and work just with other PSPs and some phones on BT's VoIP network, there are plans to extend the service over the next four years to 100 different countries and make it compatible with landlines, mobiles and PCs.

However, the application will not be making an appearance in the US and criticism has already begun for the proposals with detractors claiming the PSP application will not fare favourably in comparison with other manufacturer's mobile VoIP offerings.
