Motherboard with built-in VoIP under development

While internet users have embraced making calls over the web through VoIP services, the combination of microphone and headset is not loved by all.

Some still prefer the weight of a phone in their hand as they speak, as well as the extra functionality a handset can offer.

With this in mind, computer component manufacturer Micro-Star International is developing a range of PC motherboards that will have a built-in phone adapter.

The P35 Platinum motherboard includes a built-in SkyTel module card paired with a Realtek high definition audio codec which will allow users to connects a standard telephone to the PC and then make use of VoIP services as well as traditional phone calls.

In addition, MSI sources told Digitimes that the phone will still be able to operate when the computer is switched off.

However, most traditional phones may be lacking features that specially-designed VoIP handsets have developed, such as rerouting calls and high voice clarity.
